About the current KUGB Charity Appeal for 2016
The KUGB's chosen Charity for 2014 is DEBRA.
This Charity was nominated by Jill Kelly of Ashington SKC.
DEBRA is the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - a painful genetic condition which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously.
EB is likely to affect 1 in 17,000 live births and it is estimated that there are currently 5,000 people with the condition in the UK.
DEBRA focuses its work in three areas:
- It funds pioneering research to find effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for EB.
- It provides an enhanced specialist EB Nursing Service, in partnership with the NHS, to deliver optimal healthcare to children and adults living with EB.
- It provides social care support to help people live with dignity. This is a service parents and people with EB can call on, to reach out for advice, advocacy in the face of red tape, and emergency grants. It provides access to specially adapted holiday homes and opportunities for social interaction.
It interconnects each of these areas to ensure a holistic approach to its care, from birth, for as long as it is needed.
