KUGB Grand Slam February 2017 : The KUGB Squads

The Karate Union of Great Britain's (KUGB) International Squads of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales came together on Saturday 25th February at the Queens Park Sports Centre, Chesterfield for the first Grand Slam of 2017.

A major event in the KUGB calendar, the Grand Slam has grown significantly in size and importance over the years. With no rostrum to stand on and no trophies to win, Squad members compete for the Pride of their Country and an opportunity to impress their Coaches in a year where KUGB Teams will be competing in the WSKA World Championships in Italy and ESKA European Championships in Portugal.

As with every Grand Slam, Squad members assemble from all over Great Britain a couple of hours prior to the Competition to undergo rigorous Squad Sessions with their respective Coaches.

A competition of this calibre requires Officials at the highest level and so, along with KUGB National Referees and Judges, there were also several International Referees and Judges present along with our team of Timekeepers and Recorders who attended a briefing meeting with Sensei Jim Brennan whilst Squad Training took place.
Once the Coaches had put the Squads through their final preparations there was a brief interlude as the Spectators began to arrive.

Many of the competitors in action at the Grand Slam were very experienced with National, European and World Champions amongst them, as well as those new to the Squad and new to the Grand Slam this year.

During the eliminations and finals the competition was fierce and there were some very exciting and outstanding performances that entertained the audience. Sensei Sherry, Chairman and Chief Instructor of the KUGB, was extremely pleased with the strong attitude and spirit of all of the competitors. He was particularly pleased with the ability and determination of the young Karateka coming through the ranks, promising a very strong future for the KUGB.

Our thanks go to Dudley Wheatcroft and the members of Satori Shotokan Karate Club, the Manager and Staff at the Queen's Park Leisure Centre, our team of Medics and all our Volunteers.
